Mauritania is a country in Northwest Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Its capital and largest city is Nouakchott. The country covers about 1 million square kilometers and has a population of around 4.5 million. Rich in mineral resources, Mauritania's economy largely depends on mining, particularly iron ore, along with agriculture and fishing. The climate is mostly arid desert.
